Best times to catch a cancellation

Mather Campground is the only reservable campground on the South Rim — which means every cancellation is precious. Here's when to watch.

1
Exactly 14 days before
The 14-day cancellation window is the single biggest driver of openings at Grand Canyon. People who booked months in advance often cancel exactly two weeks out when they confirm travel plans. Watch this window closely for your target dates.
2
Mid-week in shoulder season
October and November see meaningful cancellation volume as summer travelers drop reservations they no longer need. Mid-week arrivals (Monday–Wednesday) are your best bet for availability outside peak months.
3
Winter (December–February)
The South Rim stays open all winter and is genuinely spectacular with snow on the canyon walls. Crowds drop by 60–70% and sites are often available same-week. Worth considering if you can handle cold nights.
💡
Pro tip: Mather Campground is the only in-park campground on the South Rim with reservations. It puts you walking distance from the rim trail, the shuttle stops, and Bright Angel Trailhead. Every other option requires driving — staying here is a completely different experience.
